Last week was Rainbows & Colors week at Future Scholars and we celebrated with a colorful and tasty Cooking Class. Our students used their fine motor skills to either place fruit loops on a plate in the shape of a rainbow or thread them onto a straw. Marshmallows made the perfect clouds to finish things off!

Based on the input we got at one of our Parent Advisory Board Meetings, we have begun hosting Career Day presentations at Future Scholars where our students can learn about some of the things our families do for a living. This was a busy week with presentations from two parents! On Monday, Ryann Lafrance (Noah, 3, and Alana, 5) stopped by to talk to our Pre-K and Kindergarten students about her engineering work with Lockheed Martin. With the help of a great powerpoint presentation, our students learned all about airplanes and the forces involved in flying--thrust, drag, lift, and gravity. Everyone had a blast doing a hands-on activity with paper and model airplanes too! On Friday we had another special guest--Lauren Hejazi (Kaela, 2, and Kaden, 4) who is a dental hygienist. She taught our students in Rooms 6, 10, 11, and 12 all about the importance of dental health (just in time since February is National Dental Health Month!), what it is like to go to the dentist, and the proper way to brush your teeth. Our students even had a chance to practice brushing on a special dragon friend. Thank you very much to Ryann and Lauren for such fun, informative, and engaging presentations as well as for the goodies they brought our students to take home with them. Our students had so much fun that we would love to have more Career Day presentations throughout the year. If you are interested in talking to our students about your job, please let us know!
This week Future Scholars is celebrating Chinese New Year a few weeks early, and Ms. Charlene brought something extra special in for her preschoolers to celebrate! Room 11 worked as a team to make delicious white rice--a staple food in China--which they got to eat after it cooked in a crockpot. This activity in the culinary arts wasn't only about cultural awareness--it was also a great opportunity for our students to learn about math by helping their teacher measure out the proper amounts of rice and water and count the number of times they stirred the mixture before leaving it to cook.
Cooking with children is a great way to build fine motor skills, explore the senses, and try new things! Our Cooking Classes also inspire children to use their creativity and imaginations. Read more about the importance of cooking with kids and find great ideas about how to get your child(ren) involved in cooking at home at Kids Health.
Reading is fun! Last week's theme was one of our favorite books here at Future Scholars: The Mitten! All of our classrooms had fun reading the story of how woodland animals, including a fox, owl, and bear, all crawl inside of a lost mitten. We also did lots of fun Mitten-themed crafts and activities! Rooms 6 and 10 colored in the animals of the story and pasted them onto a mitten. Room 11 used their imagination to draw their own animals sticking out from a mitten. In addition to their mitten craft, Ms. Tracy's class had fun recreating the story by taking turns trying to fit inside of a "mitten" (the large bag that stores our parachute).
