Get Ready: Dr. Seuss Week is Coming!

2/24/2015

Next week we will be celebrating all things Dr. Seuss! We're currently working hard to fill our hallways with Seuss-tastic decorations and crafts, and next week will be full of fun Dr. Seuss activities for our students!

The week will end with our second Family Fun Night of the school year: Dr. Seuss Family Fun Night on Friday March 6TH. This is a family event for parents to enjoy with their children, and this time we are opening the event up to the wider community so please invite your friends and extended family with children. There will be games, face painting, food, and lots of fun!

We also invite our staff and students to dress as a Dr. Seuss character on Friday March 6TH, either for just for Family Fun Night or for the whole school day! Don't wait until the last minute to plan your costume! Below are some examples of easy Dr. Seuss costumes you can make or assemble for your child. Think outside of the box! These are just some examples...any Dr. Seuss book or character is welcome! And, if all else fails, come to school with a wacky hair-do and brightly colored or patterned clothing.

With the frigid cold weather we have had lately, all our classrooms have been doing alternative in-door activities rather than go out outside, but this week Ms. Tracy's friends in Room 10 got bundled up and ventured out to the playground for some snowy fun!

Check out more photos of our students playing in the snow and be sure to check back periodically for new additions to this album!

Career Days at Future Scholars!

2/20/2015

Based on the input we got at one of our Parent Advisory Board Meetings, we have begun hosting Career Day presentations at Future Scholars where our students can learn about some of the things our families do for a living. This was a busy week with presentations from two parents!

On Monday, Ryann Lafrance (Noah, 3, and Alana, 5) stopped by to talk to our Pre-K and Kindergarten students about her engineering work with Lockheed Martin. With the help of a great powerpoint presentation, our students learned all about airplanes and the forces involved in flying--thrust, drag, lift, and gravity. Everyone had a blast doing a hands-on activity with paper and model airplanes too!
On Friday we had another special guest--Lauren Hejazi (Kaela, 2, and Kaden, 4) who is a dental hygienist. She taught our students in Rooms 6, 10, 11, and 12 all about the importance of dental health (just in time since February is National Dental Health Month!), what it is like to go to the dentist, and the proper way to brush your teeth. Our students even had a chance to practice brushing on a special dragon friend.
Thank you very much to Ryann and Lauren for such fun, informative, and engaging presentations as well as for the goodies they brought our students to take home with them. Our students had so much fun that we would love to have more Career Day presentations throughout the year. If you are interested in talking to our students about your job, please let us know!

Lincoln Log Cabins for Presidents Week

This week is all about our presidents and today Ms. Charlene's pre-school class did something extra special to celebrate our 16TH president, Abraham Lincoln: they made edible Lincoln log cabins out of pretzels and icing!

Our students had fun and worked on their fine motor skills by spreading white icing on a paper plate and arranging pretzel sticks to make houses, much like the log cabin that President Lincoln grew up living in. And of course when the cabins were all assembled, everyone ate them! Delicious!
