Give Kids a Smile Day

February is National Children's Dental Health month and Feb. 6TH is Kids Give a Smile Day--a one-day event when kids who could not normally afford dental services, can receive free dental care!

On Feb. 6Th, volunteers in the dental community will give their time and services to deliver screenings and treatment to needy children age 12 and under.
Dental Health is a serious problem in New Jersey:
~More than 1/3 of all children in the US have no dental insurance
~Uninsured children are 2.5 times less-likely to receive dental care than insured children
~80% of tooth decay is suffered by 25% of the children
~51 million school hours are lost each year to untreated cavities
~Economic disadvantage is the number one predictor of  tooth decay in children
Appointments fill up quickly, so if you would like to take advantage of this opportunity, don't hesitate! Parents are able to make an appointment at the office of their choice at no cost to themselves or the community. Check out this list of all participating dental offices.

So read more about the GKAS program, visit its page on the New Jersey Dental Association website or check out their brochure.

Rice is Nice!

This week Future Scholars is celebrating Chinese New Year a few weeks early, and Ms. Charlene brought something extra special in for her preschoolers to celebrate! Room 11 worked as a team to make delicious white rice--a staple food in China--which they got to eat after it cooked in a crockpot. This activity in the culinary arts wasn't only about cultural awareness--it was also a great opportunity for our students to learn about math by helping their teacher measure out the proper amounts of rice and water and count the number of times they stirred the mixture before leaving it to cook.

Future Scholars Open for MLK Day

REMINDER: Future Scholars will be open regular hours next Monday Jan. 19TH for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

If you have off from work on MLK Day, consider dedicating your time to a day of service. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'"--a quote that inspired the MLK Day of Service. The MLK Day of Service is a day when Americans across the country answer King's question by coming together to serve their neighbors and communities.

Participating in community service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community. MLK Day is the perfect opportunity to teach children about the importance of helping others and building a strong and supportive community. To get involved with a service project this MLK Day, visit All For Good and browse the projects listed. There are tons of great opportunities that you (and your children) can get involved in next Monday!
