This week we enjoyed our first ever International Art Show! Our students and staff had fun in April learning about cultures from around the world and on Wednesday, April 29TH our students took turns traveling around the school to experience a different country in each classroom. Parents were also invited to stop by later that night.

Happy Earth Day!

Today we celebrate Earth Day, the celebration of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.  Year after year, Earth Day has helped to "broaden the base of support for environmental programs, rekindle public commitment and build community activism around the world through a broad range of events and activities."

It's important to instill an appreciation and respect for the environment in our children, and Earth Day is the perfect opportunity to do so. Our teachers have a lot of fun activities planned for today, but it is important that parents encourage their kids to respect the Earth as well. Here are some fun ways that you can celebrate Earth Day with your children:
Reusable Tote Bag

Decorate a Reusable Tote Bag
Have fun using paint or fabric markers to decorate a reusable tote bag. Use these bags for groceries, lunches, beach bags, etc. and explain to your child the importance or reusing materials.
Pick Up Trash in Your Neighborhood
Kids are constantly picking things up even when we don't want them to, so why not encourage them to clean up the Earth? Wear a pair of disposable gloves and head to your favorite local park, playground, or beach with your child cleaning and picking up trash. Be sure to clean up broken glass or other hazardous items yourself. While you clean, explain to children that trash can harm animals who try to eat it and that it can take a very long time for trash items to decompose.

Plant a Fruit or Vegetable Garden
Planting a garden is a fun way for preschoolers to learn to nurture the environment. With your child, choose seeds of your favorite fruits and vegetables (chose varieties that will grow well in your area) and care for them through the year. Children will learn and get good exercise too!

Collect and Sort Recyclables
If you don't already collect recyclables at your home, Earth Day is the perfect day to start! Ask you child if they know which items can be recycled and remind them if they forget what they learned at school! Make a game out of seeing how many bottles and cans you can recycle, and if you take the items to a recycling center, let your child turn the money you get back into a reward for her efforts.

Try To Cut Down On Screen Time!

3/16/2015

Tablets, laptops, and the television can be both fun and educational for children, but too much screen time can lead to an unhealthy lifestyle. Are your kids watching too much?
Picture
"Screen time" includes: watching TV shows, watching movies, and playing video games and computer games. Too much screen time promotes sluggishness and immobility--habits that may follow children for the rest of their life. The CATCH program encourages fewer hours of screen time and an increase in physical activity to keep children fit and healthy.

The recommendation for screen time is 2 hours or less per day. Here are some alternate ideas to help reduce screen time for your child:
  • Read aloud to your child instead of placing them in front of the TV or a computer
  • Play games like catch or hide and seek
  • Put together puzzles
  • Dance to music!
  • Have them help with chores like sweeping, setting the table, or making the bed
  • Go for a walk in the park
  • Color, make something with art supplies, or use molding clay
  • Play water games--water colors, sprinklers, swimming, etc.
These tips are courtesy of the CATCH program.

Family dinner cartoon
Food Plays a major role in all families. It is important to encourage the whole family to make healthy food choices. Here are some jumping off points to help make your family healthier!
  • Try to have at least one meal together every day as a family
  • Assign tasks to all family members to get dinner on the table
  • Put meals on everyone's calendar. Sometimes even family time needs to be scheduled!
  • Establish some table rules--eat together at the dinner table. Say NO to TV!
  • Don't give up on new foods! Research has shown that it takes a child 7-10 times of trying a new food to actually like it.
  • Make you meals colorful--offer a variety of different fruits and vegetables.
These tips were provided by the CATCH program.
