This past week at Future Scholars was "Celebrate America" week and our students were busy learning about their country. In between your weekend festivities, why not involve your children in some traditional Memorial Day observances? Here are some ideas that are easy to explain to children and can also be fun:
- If you have an American flag at your home, lower it to the half-staff position, and re-raise it at noon, which symbolizes the memory of fallen soldiers being raised by the living.
- Purchase and wear red poppies, our national emblem of Remembrance. The American Legion's artificial poppy program provides income for disabled and unemployed veterans who have no other means of earning money.
- Visit a cemetery and place flags/flowers on the graves of our fallen heroes. The Beverly National Cemetery on Bridgeboro Road is a good option.
- Attend a Memorial Day Parade--children will enjoy seeing soldiers march in uniform and have fun waving a flag. Check out this list of local parades.
Future Scholars will be closed next Monday, May 25th in honor of this important holiday. Enjoy your long weekend!
